Choose an official rate for an invoice or customs date

Match the relevant date to a publication's valid period, then keep its source document.

An official rate applies over a publication's valid period. Use the relevant invoice, tax point or customs declaration date to find that publication. The publication date and the date you need to value can differ.

  • Choose the date relevant to the invoice, tax point or customs declaration.
  • Use each invoice line's own date when converting a batch.
  • Keep the publication's validity and source document with the lookup.

Start with the relevant date

Identify the date you need to value: the invoice date, tax point or customs declaration date. Then find the publication whose valid period contains it.

A rate valid today does not establish the rate for an earlier invoice or declaration. Past-date lookups require Basic or above.

Read the publication's valid period

Authorities publish tables with their own cadence and validity. These can differ by country and table, so use the selected publication's valid period.

Request GET /v1/official/{country}/{type}/rate/{base}/{quote}?date=YYYY-MM-DD. The date parameter is the date you need to value.

The response date is the publication's valid_from. It can be earlier than your requested date. The valid_to field is null when the publication remains valid until the next publication.

Convert invoice lines with different dates

Use POST /v1/official/{country}/{type}/convert for a batch of up to 100 invoice lines. Each line supplies base, quote, amount, date and direction.

Give each line its own relevant date. The API can then use the rate valid for that line.

A failed line returns result set to error, with code and message. Other lines still convert. Batch conversion requires Plus or above.

Keep the source document

Add expand=source to the rate lookup to retrieve the exact printed value and units, publication number, publication date, document URL and retrieval time. This requires Basic or above.

Keep the source document and the publication's validity with your lookup. The method field identifies whether the rate was published as printed, inverted or derived using the authority's own rule.

Questions

Should I always use the invoice date?

Use the date relevant to the task. That may be the invoice date, tax point or customs declaration date. The lookup returns the rate valid on the date you supply.

Why does the response show an earlier date?

The response date is the publication's valid_from. A publication can cover your requested date even when its valid period began earlier.

Can one batch contain several dates?

Yes. Each of the batch's up to 100 lines can supply its own date. Batch conversion requires Plus or above.
