Why the published rate can differ from the market rate

A rate published for tax, customs or reporting serves a defined purpose. It may be a daily reference, a weekly average or a value fixed for a longer period. That value can differ from the market rate when you look it up.

Check which table applies to your task and which date decides the rate. exchangerate.dev republishes authorities' tables and links to the authorities. It is not an official source and is not affiliated with them.

Check the valid period, not just the publication date

Tables can be daily, weekly, fortnightly, monthly, quarterly or yearly. Some are published in advance. Each value carries its valid period, which may end on a set date or continue until the next publication.

The publication date and the first valid date can differ. Use the validity shown with the value and the rule described on the country page.

Get the rate and its source through the API

Request a rate on a date, retrieve a full table or download CSV. The API also provides history and the source document behind each value, so you can trace a rate to its publication.

The change feed at /v1/official/changes lists new and corrected publications. Use it to check which publications have changed.

Questions

Which rate should I use?

Start with the country and the purpose: tax, customs or reporting. Then check the authority's rule and the value's valid period. Different tables can serve different purposes in the same country.

Are all tables updated every day?

No. Publication schedules range from daily to yearly. A published value may remain valid across several days, and some tables apply until the next publication.

Can I get a rate for a past date?

Yes, within the history available for that table. Country pages show where our history starts. The API can return the rate on a date and the source document behind the value.

Does the IRS publish an official exchange rate?

The IRS says it has no official exchange rate and accepts any posted rate used consistently. The United States page includes the IRS's published yearly average and the separate Treasury reporting table.
