USD/MXN — US Dollar to Mexican Peso

USD/MXN is the reference rate for the US–Mexico remittance corridor, one of the largest in the world — the rate millions of Mexican families watch to know what a dollar sent home is worth in pesos.

USD/MXN measures how many Mexican pesos one US dollar buys. It is one of the most actively traded emerging-market currency pairs in the world and the single most important exchange rate for Mexico, given the depth of US–Mexico trade and the scale of dollar remittances the Mexican diaspora sends home.

The peso floats freely under Banco de México (Banxico), which targets inflation rather than a fixed rate. Because the United States is Mexico's largest trading partner, USD/MXN is highly sensitive to US economic conditions, USMCA trade relations, and manufacturing "nearshoring", as well as to the interest-rate gap between Banxico and the US Federal Reserve — Banxico has historically held rates well above the Fed to support the currency.

The peso is also a high-liquidity proxy for global risk appetite: it tends to strengthen in risk-on periods (the so-called "super peso") and sell off quickly when sentiment turns. For the millions of Mexicans working in the US, USD/MXN is the rate that determines what a remittance is worth back home.

This page shows an indicative mid-market USD/MXN rate that can update intraday through the trading week. Every API response carries a source and market_session field, so you can tell whether a given quote was live or a daily fix. Rates are indicative only, not for settlement or regulated trading.

Frequently asked questions

What does USD/MXN measure?
USD/MXN states how many Mexican pesos you receive for one US dollar. A rate of 18.50 means one dollar buys 18.50 pesos.
Is USD/MXN a live rate on exchangerate.dev?
USD/MXN is served as an indicative mid-market rate that can update intraday through the trading week. Check the source and market_session fields on each API response to see whether a specific quote was a live tick or a daily reference fix.
Why is USD/MXN so sensitive to the US economy?
The United States is Mexico's largest trading partner, so US growth, interest rates, and trade policy (USMCA, tariffs, nearshoring) flow straight through to the peso. Banxico also tends to track the Fed to preserve the rate differential that supports the currency.
How do remittances affect USD/MXN?
Mexico is one of the world's largest remittance recipients, and those inflows are overwhelmingly US-dollar denominated. USD/MXN is the benchmark that determines how many pesos each dollar sent home converts to, which is why it is the most-checked rate for Mexican families.
What is the "super peso"?
A nickname for extended periods of peso strength, driven by Mexico's high interest-rate carry, nearshoring investment inflows, and steady remittances. The peso is a liquid risk proxy, so it can also reverse quickly when global sentiment sours.
How do I get the USD/MXN rate via the API?
GET /v1/latest/USD?symbols=MXN returns the indicative rate along with source, market_session, and timestamp. The reverse (MXN as base) is also supported. The free tier covers it, no credit card required.
Is USD/MXN suitable for settlement or trading decisions?
No. exchangerate.dev provides indicative rates for reference and informational use only — not for settlement, regulated trading, or as a source-of-record price.
